Great Falls remembers the early days of cars in a less than idyllic fashion

Thanks to the historians of Great Falls we have these wonderful quotes. Remembering his family’s model T, Tony Dalich said “Because of the strong language used by fathers when cranking their cars, mothers would lure the younger children away from the scene. But it seemed necessary and proper for me, the oldest son, to stay and help, thereby adding some choice new words to my vocabulary.” And in 1908 H. J. Riebeling was quoted in the Great Falls Tribune saying “I think I voice the sentiments of everybody when I state that if auto owners persist in driving their machines at the speed they have been doing . . . everybody will carry a shotgun or rifle.” How times have changed!

Preparing your vehicle for winter

If you’ve been living in Great Falls for a while you probably already understand winter car maintenance. But if you’ve come here from a warmer part of the world, here are some tips to keep you motoring safely once the temperatures drop!
  • Tires: Make sure your tires are properly inflated and have enough tread. In snowy or icy conditions, consider using snow tires or tire chains. We have a wide range of tires suitable for all types of winter weather.
  • Battery: Cold weather can shorten the lifespan of your battery, so make sure it is in good condition. If you're going to be driving in very cold temperatures, consider installing a battery blanket or heater.
  • Antifreeze: Check your antifreeze levels and make sure you have a version suitable for very cold weather. This will help prevent your engine from freezing up.
  • Lights: Check all your lights to make sure they are working properly. In winter weather, it is especially important to have clear headlights and taillights, especially with reduced hours of daylight.
  • Windshield wipers and washer: Make sure your windshield wipers are in good condition and replace them if necessary. In snowy or icy conditions, use a windshield washer fluid that is designed for low temperatures and make sure it’s filled up regularly.
  • Gas: Keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent the fuel line from freezing.
  • Defroster and climate control: Make sure your defroster and climate control are working properly. You don’t want to find out they're not after the first frost!

Where to buy used tires in Great Falls?

In Electric City almost everyone has at least 2 sets of tires for their vehicles, to cope with the changing climate and sometimes challenging terrain. What tires do you need for Great Falls weather?

What tires do you need for Great Falls weather?
Electric City has a pretty varied climate! In the summer, it can get pretty hot, with temperatures ranging from the high 70s to the low 90s. However, there are often milder days mixed in, and summer thunderstorms are not uncommon. The winters here are long and can be very cold, with temperatures often dipping below zero. In fact, there are, on average, 44 days per year when the temperature never gets above freezing. The city also sees a lot of snowfall, with an average of 66 inches each year, and 45 snowy days every year.

Winter

The weather here means that you’ll almost certainly want to invest in some seasonal winter tires to keep your vehicle safe while driving on those winter roads. These could be general winter tires or tires marked specifically as snow or ice tires.
There are a few key distinctions between snow tires and ice tires. Snow tires are designed to provide better traction and stability in snowy conditions. They generally have a more jagged tread pattern and wider tread blocks to grip and clear the snow. Ice tires, on the other hand, are specifically made for driving on extremely icy surfaces. They can be studded, but not all are. Some will have a particularly sticky rubber compound mix and a special, closely spaced tread pattern that grips the ice while clearing away water.

Spring, summer, and fall

When the weather warms up so it averages above 45 °F you can switch out your winter tires for some warmer weather treads. What you choose will depend on your driving. For regular drivers who spend almost all their time on paved roads, either all-season tires or touring tires are a great bet. For people who need to drive on unpaved roads more frequently, then all-terrain tires will be a good idea. And for the lovers of high-performance sports cars, whizzing along the winding Montana roads all summer, putting some summer tires on your car will give you the handling edge you need.

DRIVERS’ GREAT FALLS GUIDE: PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Drivers’ Great Falls guide: practical information
Drivers’ Great Falls guide: practical information
With its small population and wide open roads, driving in and around Electric City is a dream. And with our guide to the laws, highways, and seasonal tire changeover, you’ll be set.

Live traffic report

While you are unlikely to encounter any traffic jams in Great Falls the traffic news is useful for construction, accidents, and weather warnings.

Seasonal tire changeover

Winter can seem to drag on for a long time in Electric City, so you might end up doing your seasonal tire changeover at different times than in other parts of the state.

Cold weather tires

You might need to put your winter tires on here as early as October when the average temperature drops below 45 °F and the first snowfall is seen. They will stand you in good stead for the next 7 months or so, allowing you to remain safe on the roads when there is snow or ice. Depending on the year you can take these tires off sometime in April.

Warm weather tires

While you might get away with taking off your winter tires and putting on your warm weather tires in March, it may be prudent to leave them on until late April, as it’s not until May that you really see average temperatures above 45 °F. If you have mud and snow-rated all-season tires for the warmer months then you might be able to switch them out a little earlier and keep them on for a little longer, as they can cope with small amounts of snowfall.
However, don’t wait too long to switch your tires out or the wait times at your local mechanic might be long as everyone panics to get them changed. And remember you’ll also need to get your wheels balanced too when switching out tires.

Driving Laws

While not everyone may seem to stick to the rules of the road, we firmly believe that everyone should! Here are a few key rules to pay attention to in Electric City.
  1. Studded tires can only be legally used from October 1 until May 31.
  2. Driving under the influence (DUI) is illegal and subject to strict penalties. The blood alcohol limit for those 21 and over is .08, and for those under 21 it’s .02.
  3. Seatbelts should be worn by everyone in a vehicle including passengers in the back seat.
  4. Speed limits are subject to weather conditions and careless or reckless driving laws. This means you can be stopped, even if you are traveling below the posted speed limit if weather conditions mean that it’s dangerous to travel at that speed.
You can read all the state’s applicable driving laws in the official Montana Drivers Manual.

Window tint laws

Tinting your vehicle windows is a great idea to keep you cool and give you some privacy, but it’s important to know the rules regulating window tints in Electric City. The city uses the state’s laws which can be read in full on the official Montana Laws website. These are the most important details:
  • Tinting your front windshield can only be done above the AS-1 line.
  • Tinting of front side windows must let in 24% of light
  • Tinting of rear and rear side windows must let in 14% of light
  • Using reflective tints is forbidden on the windshield and only allowed on other windows if the tint has a reflective value below 35%.
Find out about all the benefits of window tinting, check out updates on the new products, get valuable pro tips, and much, much more!

Roads and highways

Great Falls is served by several highways that connect the city to the rest of Montana and beyond.
Interstate 15 runs to the west of Great Falls on its way north to south, connecting the city to Helena to the south and then going north to Canada. It provides access to Great Falls International Airport and Wadsworth Park.
Interstate 15 Business /Interstate 315 is a short loop off the I-15 through the center of Great Falls, providing access to local businesses and amenities.
U.S. Route 87 runs through Great Falls along 10th Avenue and 14th Street and 15th Street, providing access to the downtown area. This is a north/south highway that connects the city to Havre to the north, just south of the Candian border, and to the south joins up with US 89, MT-3, and MT-200 for a short way. Going south it passes through Billings before making its way to Texas.
U.S. Route 89 also runs through Great Falls, connecting the city to Glacier National Park to the north, and Yellowstone National Park to the south. In the city, it goes along 10th Avenue South before heading west with the I-15 for a short way.
Montana Highway 3 connects the city of Great Falls with Billings to the southeast.
Montana Highway 200 runs from east to west across the entire state of Montana. In the city limits, it runs concurrently with US 89, and to the west goes to Lincoln and Missoula, and to the east to Grass Range, Circle and Sidney.

With the outdoor lifestyle that many people in Electric City enjoy, the tires on their vehicles need to reflect this. Many of the roads, when you are going out into nature, will be dirt or only partially paved. And people also enjoy driving out into the wilderness to camp, hunt, or fish.
The best tires suited to this type of lifestyle are some sort of off-road tires. These could be all-terrain tires, mud terrain tires, or rugged-terrain tires. All-terrain tires are probably the best choice for most people as they can go from pavement to rough terrain easily and won’t impact your gas consumption as much, on paved roads, as mud-terrain tires. However, if you spend the bulk of your time driving on unpaved roads and across the wilderness, you might be better off with mud-terrain tires.
If all this is confusing to you, we understand - learning about tires, and understanding the benefits of them all takes a while, so why not give us a call, toll-free, at 1-888-566-6214 and we’ll discuss the benefits of each of these types of tires with you and help you decide which ones best suit your specific vehicle and driving style.
