What tires do you need for Virginia Beach weather?

What tires do you need for Virginia Beach weather?
What tires do you need for Virginia Beach weather?
Virginia Beach, and the whole Hampton Roads area, have a temperate climate, with warm summers and mild winters. The average high and low temperatures in July are 86°F and 73°F, and in January the average high and low range is 35°F to 50°F. However, Virginia Beach is located on the Atlantic coast, so the weather can be unpredictable. In the summer, thunderstorms and occasional hurricanes can bring heavy rain to the area. The fall and winter months are generally mild and relatively dry, but the region does see occasional snow with an average of just under 6 inches per year, inland. Overall, Virginia Beach enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year, making it a great place to live or visit at any time.
This mild climate also makes buying the right tires for the weather easy, as all-season tires are a great choice year-round. These tires perform well on both wet and dry roads, cope with light snow (especially if you choose a set marked M+S), and are suited to the daytime temperature range in the Resort City.
For fans of performance cars or sports cars, summer tires might be preferred for the hotter months, as they are great for a sportier driving style. So if you enjoy fast cornering, acceleration, and braking, then you can put summer tires on your car for most of the year, only switching them out for all-season or winter tires for the coolest months.

Drivers’ Virginia Beach guide: practical information
Drivers’ Virginia Beach guide: practical information
Whether you’re visiting for your summer vacation or living in Resort City, our guide to driving here will be invaluable. We cover traffic information, where to get the best value tires, local driving rules, and much more.

Live traffic report

Checking traffic reports in Virginia Beach and the whole Hampton Roads area, is important, especially during the summer months when tourists flood the city:

Seasonal tire changeover

People living in Resort City are lucky as they can keep the same set of tires on their vehicles year-round. The climate in the city rarely gets too hot, even in the summer months, with temperatures staying under 90°F, and in winter there isn’t enough snow for winter tires to be necessary. This means you can keep your all-season tires on all the time, making life much easier, and knowing that your family is safe on the roads.

Driving Laws

Like in the rest of the state, driving laws in Virginia Beach are tightly enforced, so it’s important to know what they are. Here are a few that you might not be aware of:
  • Young drivers:, If you’re under 18 you’re not allowed to drive between the hours of midnight and 4:00 a.m. However, if you hold a driver’s license, not a learner’s permit, there are a few exceptions including emergencies and when accompanied by a parent.
  • Cruising: During the summer you’re not allowed to cruise (drive slowly, past the same point, in the same direction, twice in a 3-hour window) on Atlantic Avenue.
  • Speeding in residential areas: In specified residential areas, if you are caught speeding there is an additional fine of $200 on top of the standard penalties. A full list of the areas can be found on the Virginia Beach Municipal Code official website.
  • Reckless driving: In Virginia, unlike many other states, speeding is a form of reckless driving and is considered a criminal misdemeanor, so may end up on your criminal record forever. This is taken particularly seriously in Virginia Beach so you should avoid speeding at all times.

Unspoken Road Rules

Every city has a few unspoken rules of the road that only locals know - and here are a few of the main ones:
  • Rain: While the Resort City doesn’t get the full impact of most storms and hurricanes there’s still a lot of rain during the summer. One thing that locals do when it rains is slow down, generally to about 10 miles per hour below the speed limit.
  • Snow: As snow is such a rare occurrence in the area most people don’t know how to drive in it so watch out for accidents and cars spinning out at the slightest bit of snow. Hopefully, you’ll be driving comfortably with your M+S marked all-season tires, which are designed for driving in small amounts of snow.
  • Three-point turns: Watch out for people doing three-point turns downtown. They’re either lost tourists or locals who’ve changed their minds about their destination.
  • High-speed highway: The I-264 is known for people driving extremely fast so be on alert while driving on this highway.

Window tint laws

Tinted windows are particularly popular in Resort City, but it’s important to stick to the rules when applying tint:
  • Front windshield: Above the AS-1 line any darkness of tint can be used.
  • Front side windows: The full windows can be tinted but must let in at least 50% of the light.
  • Rear windows: The full windows can be tinted with a film of at least 35% VTL.
  • Full rules: You can see the full state rules on the official Virginia State Legislature website.
Learn more about tinting your vehicle windows, including the many options available, to suit all tastes and styles.

Roads and highways

Virginia Beach and the whole Hampton Roads area are served by several major highways, including Interstate 64, Interstate 264, US Route 58, US Route 13, and US Route 60. These highways provide access to Virginia Beach from all over the state as well as from neighboring states.
  • I-64 called the Hampton Roads Beltway in the area, goes north-south for a short distance through the west of the city, connecting it with Richmond, Norfolk, and Chesapeake, where it ends. In the other direction, it heads west to West Virginia and Kentucky.
  • I-264 is a short interstate in the Hampton Roads area, that runs east-west through the city, providing access to Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and Norfolk. This highway goes all the way to the Oceanfront District, ending near Pacific Avenue
  • US-13 runs north-south through the city, providing access to Newport News via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. To the south of the city, it passes by Suffolk before heading off into North Carolina. To the north, it crosses over into Maryland before heading north into Delaware.
  • US-58 runs east-west through Virginia Beach ending its run west at Oceanfront. This highway connects the city with Norfolk and Suffolk and heads west, ending its run just over the state line in Tenessee.
  • US-60 runs north along Resort Beach, where this highway starts. It then heads west parallel to the I-64 passing Richmond and Lexington, before heading west, where it carries on all the way to Arizona.

Tolls in the Hampton Roads area

The Hampton Roads area around Virginia Beach is home to a number of toll roads, bridges, and tunnels. The most well-known of these is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, which spans 20 miles and connects Virginia Beach to Cape Charles on the Eastern Shore. Other toll facilities in the area include:
  • I-64 Express Lanes
  • Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (Rt 13)
  • Chesapeake Expressway (Rt 168)
  • Dominion Boulevard (US 17)
  • Elizabeth River Tunnels (Downtown Tunnel and Midtown Tunnel)
  • George P. Coleman Bridge (Rt 17)
  • South Norfolk Jordan Bridge
You can use an E-ZPass to pay all these tolls and more information on the routes and exact tolls can be found on the official Toll Roads in Virginia website.

What tires are best for Virginia Beach?

All-season tires are a great choice for Virginia Beach, as they provide good traction and handling in various weather conditions. In general, all-season tires offer a smooth ride and long tread life, making them a great option for drivers who want dependability and performance. They're also designed to last longer than both winter and summer tires, so they'll save you time and money in the long run.

Do I need winter tires in Virginia Beach?

In Virginia Beach, winter tires are not necessary. The temperatures here rarely dip below freezing, and when they do, it's only for a few days at a time. Winter tires are designed for driving in snow and ice, neither of which are common here. In addition, the extra weight of winter tires can actually reduce fuel efficiency. So, unless you're planning to drive to a ski resort, you can save yourself some money by skipping the winter tires.
